Swallowtail Butterfly (Two Photographs)

For some time now I have wanted to be able to make modest changes to the backgrounds of my photographs without affecting my subject. There are many ways to do this, some more complicated than others. Here I used MacPhun’s Aurora HDR’s luminosity masking to affect the background. Some color change has come from my use of a levels adjustment in Photoshop, not from the neutral HDR setting I chose. The former technique has real possibilities. Levels and some masking works well in Photoshop, the mask needs to be carefully crafted but it is also a technique I like that can work wonders on a photograph, for example if you want a darker background and lighter foreground.

  1. Have you ever used or tried Lumenzia by Greg Benz? It’s pretty amazing when it comes to making selections especially to work with light. I use it to make practically all my selections these days. It’s so powerful and I haven’t even scratched the surface!

  3. Victor, thank you for the information. I’ve recently purchased HDR Aurora and your advice fits in with that purchase. Also, I took some photos of bees and a swallowtail butterfly like the one you are showing at a visit to the Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich, MA. I’ll try out your suggestions using HDR Aurora.

In Lightroom you can also use the colour settings that can be manipulated separately, one of my favourites… 🙂
