By Definition Opportunistic (Two Photographs)

I was asked if I planned my photography, specifically of insects. I am an opportunist, I go to reserves and trails where I might see birds, insects, landscapes etc. However, for the most part I never know what I will find. Some days there is nothing, other days not enough hours to capture it all. On the coldest days of winter I remain inside and when the heat and humidity are excessive I hide in the shade. The challenge comes when I do find something. I go through a mental checklist: do I have a working exposure, is my depth of field etc. okay, am I in the best position, and do I need to wait for my subject to get into a better position. When I stumble across something likely to flee I will shoot regardless and try to fix things with the camera to my eye. This is why I say that finding something is half the battle and getting it right in camera and processing the results the other half.
