A Little Thing (Two Photographs)

It is sometimes hard to name an insect; some go through many stages of growth in which they really look nothing like they do as adults. I was not sure if this was a grasshopper or not. I submitted the shots to Bugguide.net and they tell me it’s a spur-throated grasshopper. What attracted me to this insect was not just that it was new to me but that it was well positioned and in good light. Always interesting to find something new, especially this year when I saw very few insects worth photographing.
Excellent shots. Is it an imago or nymph?

They told me it was not an instar. So neither.

Tiny, little plant chomper! Dare I say it is almost cute? Great sighting and capture, Victor.

Thanks. Hard to imagine anything that small could cause much damage and there do not seem to be a lot of them.

I notice when they hatch out in my garden and thankfully, so do the birds, especially the sparrows who love grasshoppers. A few manage to reach adulthood to start the cycle all over again. What a world, eh?

The first shot reminded me of a dinosaur. Beautiful macro shot of the little creature. I’m glad that someone was able to help you with the identification–I would have been at a loss to identify the insect.

Thanks. Yeah it’s great to have easy access to entomologists, should be the same for medical doctors.
