An Interpretation (Four Photographs)

The male wood duck in full color stands out against any background. With the water reflecting the early spring colors, it’s a real stand out. Many proponents of black and white photography say that color can distract from the subject and that B&W gets the essence of the subject. It’s hard not to agree with that proposition. So given the “big” color of these shots I wanted to see what I could do in B&W. That process provides many options, from the color filter to affect tones, to the greater latitude in exposure. In my view, B&W provides more opportunity for interpretation than a straight color treatment that stays faithful to circumstance. It’s another reason I find B&W so intriguing.
Nice pic. Relaxing.

Very nice. And I agree B&W can give you more latitude in processing. I like to use Silver Efex as a final step. Being of the 35mm film generation the filters available can add the right touch to a finished product. I have Agfa 35 mm original photos that match up well with the digital filter results in Silver Efex.

Thanks. I have Silver EFX but moved MacPhun Tonality CX for mac, the latter offering a few more bells and whistles.

Awesome shots, Victor. The difference between the last two examples is quite dramatic.

It almost seems like a sin to not show off a wood duck’s beautiful plummage. But he’s still very striking in black and white.

Nice B&W conversions. The last photo is such a great color photo I just don’t see why one would want it in B&W but that is strictly a personal preference.

These are sensational photos of this very colorful duck! The final color photo is one of the best I’ve ever seen of male Wood Duck.

Though the pictures are the same, but color and B&W bring out different feels! 😀
