Egret Preening (Three Photographs)

This is the same egret as last week, nothing like a subject that poses over a long period. The secret to egret photographs is under-exposing like you would for snow, otherwise you will not get the white feather detail. The trick is to under-expose just enough so that the background still looks reasonable. Not enough negative exposure compensation and detail is lost, too much and the scene looks surreal, if not dull. I have not always got it right and with this bird, I erred a bit too much in some shots on keeping the background realistic.

  2. You certainly fooled me about not getting the background perfect. For me they’re flawless.

  3. Beautiful shots! I love to watch these big birds when they preen because they get their hugely long necks practically wrapped around their bodies to do it. Fascinating Nature!
