Bees (Three Photographs)

Bees are a popular macro/close-up subject. If we are lucky the sun highlights the eyes and the body, but most of the time I find artificial light can help capture the subject in brighter light, freeze motion and get good color. The trick is not to create specular highlights, or limit them. Specular highlights occur where the light creates bright spots on the subject. Diffusing your flash with a soft box filled with some fabric is helpful. The catch is that the sun also creates these highlights (catch lights in birds’ eyes), so it would be more accurate to say we do not want to add more highlights than nature did.

  5. Thanks for your post – I enjoyed your photos. We are trying to attract bees into our garden at the moment. I have just started a poetry blog here on WordPress in case you have time to have a look? Have a good afternoon, Sam 🙂

    • Thanks. I will pass by before long. There is some great work on attracting bees out there. Bee hotels work.
