A Jumping Spider (Four Photographs)

It’s an annoying truth that I have seen more jumping spiders on my sleeve than on plants, and many of those on my jacket were fine specimens. You would think that if they were on your sleeve you get them onto a leaf, but they are clever and once off can disappear instantaneously. This primarily black spider had a touch of brown in its fur, nothing colorful. I know of a nature journal that has been in print for many decades and all of its illustrations, including photographs have always been in B&W. I think we seldom look at the color of spiders and our minds assume they are all dark, poisonous and rather more imposing despite their size. But jumping spiders are benign and harmless. In the house I capture them in Tupperware and release them. Science tells us they have great instincts, eyesight and hearing, and for all that they are still spiders and most people would rather not have a spider as a house guest.
These are so wonderfully detailed shots, Victor and B&W suits them well. Love the angle of the 3rd shot, tucked into the curve of the leaf.

If I find these guys in winter, I put them on my houseplants… in case I have a bad bug that needs eating 😉
For summer, they go outside.
