White Admiral Butterfly (Two Photographs)

With most animals there are times of day and circumstances that make for easier photographs. When its cooler out insects slow down, when they are feeding it is often possible that they will ignore you. Here the butterfly flew to the ground to get some salt and minerals, it was not concerned with my presence knowing it could escape easily. My staying still and quiet added to its comfort. I have seen some photographers chase butterflies or wait for them to stop, in my experience that can be quite frustrating. It’s not unusual for a butterfly when feeding to become comfortable being photographed only to have a bird or person make a sudden move and the butterfly is gone in a flash.

  2. That’s happened to me as well. It’s hard to know when they’ll let you close. It must depend on how hungry they are!

  4. Nicely done, Victor. I especially like the shallow depth of field in the top picture.
