Great Blue Heron (Four Photographs)

The great blue heron was one of the first birds I shot when I became more serious about nature photography, and shots of this bird have been a staple of my portfolio ever since. Whether in flight, hunting, feeding, or preening, if I see one I try to get a good shot of it. Given that they often like coves where the light is poor as much as they like the bright sun, exposure and white balance can be tricky even for the best of cameras and photographers. They are large, prehistoric-like and very active but unfortunately their breeding grounds are threatened and they are on the danger lists.

  1. The pose in the third one begs a caption of some sort, but the last one is the best. They do tend to blend into the background more than the photographer would want, though.
