Woodpeckers and an Announcement (Three Photographs)

For some time now my wife, Belinda, has had her own blog on WordPress and it’s been quite successful. One of our fellow bloggers had a sense that this might be the case a while back. Have a look at Belinda Grover at Stops Along the Way (this is a clickable link). As for the photos here, these are a mix of hairy and pileated woodpeckers, with the red-head being the pileated one.

What’s the secret to getting good shots of birds without scaring them off?

A long lens, reduce sudden movements and noise. More often than not birds will see you first. Take the shot when you see the bird, you may not get another chance. Birds that are pre-occupied, e.g. with feeding, are easier.

Mirrorless are getting better. But not much cheaper. I’m going Fuji for some things.

Have a look at at the Fuji, Olympus, and Sony cameras. Electronic view finders. TVs not optical views.

Yeah, but who really gets there first ? Ellen has a great 100-400 Canon. Crisp and clear, I tried it once or twice.

Super woodpecker captures. I always enjoy woodpeckers. The redbellied and redheaded are my favorites, but I rarely see the latter. I’ve been a follower of Belinda’s blog for a while, but am surprised to learn she is your wife. It must be really cool to have two photographers in the family.
