I started out in photography with a manual camera and a handheld light meter. When light meters were built into cameras we also got aperture and shutter-speed modes as well as depth of field indicators (often a button to stop down the lens).  With the coming of more automated cameras there has been debate over what mode to use, manual, aperture, shutter speed or full auto. There are as many people who maintain that professionals shoot manually as there are those who say they shoot in aperture mode. The reality is that each has its place; shutter speed for some sports, full program mode for street and journalism, for example, and even then there are debates. When asked, I suggest aperture mode as a good place to start because it gives the most latitude for highlighting the subject and other effects.
