Shooting nature, reading guides and meeting naturalists, you get an education in the wildlife you see. It helps in many ways, including predicting what you will see and where you will see it. One element of that is the life-cycle of the animals you encounter. It’s very clear that many live a very hard life, with a lot of natural and man-made challenges. Remove the man-made challenges of diminishing habitat and climate change and it’s still a hard-fought life. In summer the turtles come out and bathe in the warm sun after a long winter in the mud under the frozen water. That they survived the winter, predators, a low-water table and other hazards makes the sojourn in the sun all the more dramatic.
