The Egret and a Word on Starting Out (Three Photographs)

This egret gradually moved into the light you see here. Photography has its limits, we are constrained by the light we have at our disposal, the willingness or context of our subject, and the technology we use to take the photograph. While all of these are elements of a photograph, in the end it is the choices we take that make the photographs. As an example, this bird moved quickly and my understanding of the camera, the light and the context of the bird helped me get these shots. So if I was talking to someone new at photography, my suggestions to them would be to study the kind of  light they are likely to encounter, look at the photographs of others and  begin thinking about composition, context and finally master their camera.
