Leaves and a Final Note on Aperture (Three Photographs)

In my first post in this series on aperture I spoke of rules of thumb, not laws. Aperture, like ISO and focal length have a few more scientific laws than most things in photography. However, I spoke mostly about rules of thumb to indicate that there is a bit of flexibility. These photos were taken at F4 on a F4 lens breaking my first rule of thumb (shoot one stop up from the minimum). They also show the phenomenon of selective focus the F Stop keeps the subject in focus while other things were more or less of out focus. The quality of the out of focus background is driven by the number of aperture blades in the lens and the distance of the background from your subject (greater than that from your lens to the subject). So my final word on aperture is test and learn how your lens is best used for the kinds of photography you do. Some lenses have greater latitude than others. Don’t be surprised if your “Kit” lens turns out to be one of your more flexible lenses!
