A White-Throated Sparrow and a Rant (Three Photographs)

I understand that social media is the place these days to rant. So be it. I was reading some articles on photography and one mentioned that much of today’s photography is clichéd, derivative or boring. Now I consider myself my own worst critic, besides I take photographs for the pleasure of it and I get to present what I like. Now I will freely admit the lack of moiré filter (most cameras don’t have them anymore) affects the feathers on this bird, that the tail is out of focus and the leg twitched in one of the photos. If you did not notice these faults so much the better. I assume a bird on a branch in some cases could be considered cliché; I have read that phrase in a number of articles on bird photography (where the author’s emphasis is on taking the bird doing something). The fact that the white-throated sparrow is quite common could also be seen to make this photo derivative. However, I can hope my audience does not find it boring. And finally and most importantly I liked this bird‘s eyes, the twinkle and the coloring.

  1. I am happy that you photograph and show a ‘common’ sparrow. The do not live where I live and I have never seen on in the flesh. (..in the feather?…)

  2. I didn’t get your sarcasm at all. I loved the shots because so often I don’t have 3 weeks to wait for the perfect photograph. I know what I want to capture but if the animals don’t cooperate or the light is not perfect, I get what I get. I move on in my travels. It was great to read your article because a friend was posting on his photos of rhinoceros and crocodiles but was jealous about my photos of elephant seals and sea otters. What is common for one isn’t necessary common for another. Thanks

    • Thank you. I was being sarcastic about the article I read. I enjoy taking photos of animals and I am not picky at all. Good shots of small birds are hard.

  3. Where as a White-Throated Sparrow may be common and boring to some, it will not be to others. We don’t get them in the UK and I’d not seen one before so its interesting to me.

    • Great! My sarcasm about the article did not quite hit the mark.

  4. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think many “pro” photographers are photo snobs. I wouldn’t pay attention. 🙂

  5. Not “boring” at all. I feel that the more common birds are taken for granted because we see them every day. Of course I personally don’t agree with this – and I think sparrows are so beautiful.
