Some Colours (Three Photographs)

These were taken in my Nikon camera color preset of “camera flat” as opposed to “vivid, landscape or “black and white.” Nikon, Canon, Fuji all have variations of these in-camera presets. Camera flat is my normal preset and is supposed to be for those who intend to edit their photos as it gives you unprocessed files to work with. However, what we see here is a combination of colors the camera does not handle particularly well and only slightly better in B&W. This happens more often than one would like with flowers, the colors tending towards florescence. My own view is that this arises from the difference in color gamuts (that is, range of color the monitor on your computer and the sensor in your camera can see). The narrowest gamut is SRGB, the color space of the web, and widest Prophoto RGB, in which this was originally edited. A second issue is that the narrow depth of field has isolated the flower in such a way that a light halo appears around the flower. Usually this is enhanced by sharpening, but here I believe it’s the transition between two extreme colors. Like it or not this is what happens and its nice to know that the fault lies not with the wetware but the software.
