Noise and grain are often confused. The first is a result of the sensors attempts to capture light at high ISO, the second was a function of old-fashioned film, you bought film that would give you the grain you wanted. Here it is a function of detail enhancement and the effect on the background; when you are increasing tonal distinctions in the monochrome range this is what you can get and depending on your taste it works or it doesn’t.
