I like face on photographs of animals, I find them engaging. Two things I have learned: 1. the degree to which the background is out of focus matters; and 2. sometimes the light will mirror split lighting in studios portraits with more light on one side than the other. There are always choices to be made in photography even in the simplest of shots.
