Windshield Reflections (Three Photographs)

One thing I discovered during a recent car show were the reflections in the car windshields. Interesting abstractions and distortions, that time and opportunity permitting I will try again.

Cars in Black and White (Three Photographs)

Old cars lend themselves to a sort of cinematic approach, higher contrast, brighter, lighter shadows, and loads of detail. The shot of the interior of the car shows this off well. The Thunderbird shows the added element of drama, and the engine a detail with a lot of tonality.

The color version of this photo was just too vibrant for my tastes. You have to give credit to the person who created this scene, plastic fries and all. Given the outrageous color, I am far more comfortable with the Black and White, which leaves little to the imagination and tones down the fluorescent orange. A lesson I have learned about color is that it can overwhelm and sometimes detracts from the broader picture or other details like the dice hanging from the mirror.

Angles and Such (Two Photographs)

Going for odd angles and shapes is something I have done a lot of when doing photography in the city. I tried this with the cars, seeing through things, teasing a larger picture. That said, in these photos, I removed a few heads and other oddities to clean up the compositions.

I think the black and white treatment, to a degree, takes the cars back in time. In many cases the owners raised the hoods making for a problematic set-up from my perspective but in the case here it worked.

More Auto Show Shots (Two Photographs)

The mundane element of these photos is that they show how cramped the auto show was. But I took these because of the reflections, the shapes, the form and the depth. I was looking for interesting detail and with old cars that is not hard to find.

Another Auto Show Shot (Two Photographs)

I shot these in black and white and convert them back to color, I find that helps me get the tones right, before I converted them back to B&W. This old Chevy was backed up against a bank window and the crowd lining up behind me did not give me much room. I was shooting with a 20mm lens, trying to get as much detail in the frame as I could. Again the final product in my view is the B&W.
