The way these dragonflies have landed illustrates how delicate and light they are. I have seen naturalists capture them and hold them in their hand before letting them go again, a very delicate manoeuvre. In photographic terms the position of the insects says something about them and that’s a story.

After worrying earlier in the year about not seeing any dragonflies, the population has rebounded though not to the extent it has in past years. However, I am seeing more of them in urban environments. Thankfully I captured a few in what I consider good poses.

Sometimes when shooting insects with my 200-500mm lens, I am simply amazed at the quality and detail that results. In this case, the far end of the tail is missing detail due to the shadow but given the lighting had I brightened it, the photo would look unnatural.

I have only rarely published photographs within days of taking them. I will make an exception here. Two days ago I was walking along a busy bike path and noticed a butterfly go by, and watched where it settled. I was pleasantly surprised to see two Monarch Butterflies mating. Not the first shots of mating butterflies I have taken, but the first of such an iconic butterfly. Made my day.
