I have grown to appreciate the hardiness of sparrows and their need to be wary of predators. Photographing them can be challenging, not just from a lighting perspective, but for their energy and erratic behaviour. This one saw me just after my first shot, and promptly turned its back on the camera, all the while maintaining a wary eye.

Getting that feeling of place and time in landscape photography is a gift. I am not sure if it’s best expressed in black and white or colour but I know a bucolic scene when I see one. I hope to do more landscapes next summer.

The locust borer is a wonderful creature. This photo was taken at 500mm with the Nikon 200-500mm lens, my “go to” nature lens. The second photo of the net-winged beetles mating was taken with a dedicated macro kit (105mm lens, extension tubes and flash). The latter gear is arguably harder to use, more prone to user error, and more expensive than the former. Times change and the gear you use changes with experience and new opportunity.

You read that midday sun is the worst for photography, but I am a fan of the harsher shadows and interesting skies. Light is light after all. Learning to use it to best advantage is an important part of photography.

It’s a great day when a bird ignores you, permitting you ample opportunity to get it in different poses as it perches. My only admonition is to move slowly and quietly. It’s just too easy to spook a bird.

Museums are a gift to photographers:

  1. Sometimes they inadvertently do comedy (note first photograph entitled Sculpture in Box – its been boxed for shipment)
  2. They usually have amazing architecture
  3. You can learn lighting from the Old Masters, e.g. the Dutch Masters

There are three things to note here:

  1. It’s great when animals give you a look
  2. Not all farms appreciate photographers
  3. In any group of animals, some will be more attentive than others
