The Smiling Frog (Three Photographs)

Many years ago I was visiting a film set for a dog food commercial. The Director pointed to one of the dogs then turned to the handler and asked, “Can you get it to smile?” I found this funny and got some dark looks for my laughing. Of course the handler had others dogs and they found one that suited the director. In photography I have noticed that anthropomorphism is one of those things that has impact, the more people can ascribe a human emotion or expression to the animal, the more they seem to like it (with the exception I suppose of angry grizzlies).
Superb.

Nice captures! The duckweed add visual interest to the composition.

These are great – funny story about the dog, too. I think you are right on about anthropomorphism. Humans are hard-wired for facial expressions and just love anything cute, thus the popularity of dog and cat videos!

These are AMAZING frog pictures! It’s so true about animals. I frequently imagine human emotions coming from animals, especially household pets. I always say they are God’s points of light though. Dave just rolls his eyes. lol

The perpetual smile. Never seen one frown. I happened upon a frog in the Adirondacks while camping many years ago. It was sitting under a bush with a typical frog smile when I noticed its back end was inside a snake’s jaws. Went down with that grin.
