Winter Robin

I always thought that Robins were a sign of spring. It turns out that if food, specifically the availability of berries is good they stick around all winter. It was a very cold day when I shot this Robin, I was surprised to see it up in a tree, I would have expected it on the ground where there was some chance of warmth. I am slowly coming to the end of my catalog of photographs from 2014. I did a lot of editing over what was an awful winter, and did some forward planning that takes a lot of stress off a daily blog. As the year goes on the majority of my remaining photographs are of birds. A less vicious winter would be welcome and would let me shoot through more months, as it is this summer is turning out wonderfully.
Foraging on the last of the berries, it seems. Great capture.

I live in northeastern MN and have seen robins as late as December and as early as February eating frozen berries and crab apples. Some migrate south but some just go a little south.
I always consider juncos to be a sing of spring. They pass through on their way north to Canada.

They’ve passed through here and should be settled down in Canada now.

fantastic catch – wonderful how long you have to sit at there waiting to take this shot.

Thanks. You happen on it by chance. Find it with your eye. Hope it stays long enough for a shutter release.
