Flycatcher (Three Photographs)

Cameras do not capture exactly what we see, and that is as true for film as digital. There is always some element of light, color or texture that is lost or added. To a degree this is where post processing comes in. It helps us interpret the exposure, contrast, color etc. to get a pleasing result that more or less reflects what we saw. Cameras apply color controls that include contrast and sharpness and we have some flexibility with that but it’s never perfect. I shoot with a neutral picture control that is supposed to make the least changes and provide the most dynamic range. The fact that many processing options exist has pushed me to experiment to see if I can do better. My intent is to find solutions so that the photos look right to me, in color and black and white. While the Macphun applications I am using are Mac only, there are other solutions for PCs (like Nik). The first photograph was edited with Intensity Pro, the second Aurora (an HDR program), and the third, the black and white, in Tonality Pro. All had basic adjustments done in Lightroom before the plugins were used. I am increasingly pleased with the results, though I wish the applications had better selection tools like Nik.

  3. It seems like I spend so much time processing. I know it improves the photo – but it can be a drag when you have a lot to go through and you’d rather be out enjoying the day! πŸ™‚

      • Very true. I had to laugh at your comment because I actually ‘like’ inclement weather just for that reason!

  4. Great shots!! I’ve never seen a flycatcher so these are doubly delightful πŸ™‚ I think I like the Intensity Pro effect myself. It’s sharp without it being too unrealistic πŸ™‚ I will remember that software for the Mac. I like Nik a lot but go through phases of PS with actions or LR and Nik!

  5. Fantastic shots and thank you for all the tips and information you share. I am new to post processing software other than a quick fix and, while I have found the tutorials and youtube videos to be helpful, I continue to completely struggle with how to use the software. Are there any books or particular videos that could help or is it just continued trial and error?

    • kelby has a few good books Lightroom for photographers is one I believe. My own frustration that people have a hard time of this has led me to write on the basics. A series of posts coming in the next month. It helps to use a popular editor like Lightroom as their are more resources.

  6. Thanks for sharing the info. Yes post processing does tons of improvement to the image. I will be starting with it soon. I am already late though. Two years photography without any retouches.
