Ichneumon Wasp (Two Photographs)

This is a rather elegant looking beast as insects go. There are 24,000 species in the Ichneumonidae family of wasps. Its relative good looks hides the fact that its young are parasites for other insects that they kill (and hence their value to farmers and agriculture). What is interesting in these two photographs is that they show this insect in two different poses, one more aggressive and the other more delicate. While I prefer portraits these photos do make for different perspectives when viewing this animal. For the record, the Missouri Department of Conservation assures us they are harmless to humans.
A very pretty face!

These are incredible! I’m confused about something though….you mentioned you prefer portraits. Aren’t these portraits? I’m wondering about the difference.

I’ve always wondered this…have you ever gotten bit/stung by any of your subjects?

No, thanks for asking. With the 105mm and extension tubes I am far enough back from the insect that I seldom worry. I do my best not to harass my subjects

That explains a few things 🙂 I have a 100mm lens but haven’t had luck with the extension tubes and only got zapped once by something…and it wasn’t even what I was photographing.

With extension tubes I use the 12 and 24mm. When the season starts the smaller one, later the larger one. They are made by Kenko and you get to keep metering and autofocus.
