The Many Faces of the Owl (Five Photographs)

These photographs of an Eastern Screech Owl were taken over several days. I posted some photos of this owl in color back in the spring. I was struck then by its many expressions and the changes in its face. Like many creatures this owl is well camouflaged, its color almost matching that of the tree. Given those colors and texture my main concern was contrast and making sure the bird stood out. Black and white has captured what I was after.

  4. A very good collection of faces. An eastern screech owl nests in a tree I pass frequently on my trail walks.

  7. I love the way it fits exactly into its hole – even down to having notches for its ears.

  9. Well done. I think the b&w really shows how effective camouflage is in protecting the bird. That is until it opens its eyes.
