I have been trying Auto-ISO with my camera in manual exposure mode, thus whatever aperture or shutter speed I choose; the camera adjusts the ISO. This allows me to more quickly and easily shift to a high shutter speed for birds in flight or a smaller aperture for insects. In practice exposure compensation still needs fiddling with as the cameras exposure meter is still only a guide to exposure. So far manual exposure with auto ISO seems to me to be increasingly workable.

Now that I have a camera that performs well at higher ISO I almost never set ISO. Just customizing it with minimum shutter speed and max ISO does the trick. (Until I forget which custom ISO I’m using and it’s all wrong that is.)

Great idea. I never thought to try that. I’m gonna give that a go next time I’m out. I think you’re right and that will give me greater control. Thanks for sharing. PS…beautiful shot here of the flowers.

When working out in the swamps here auto ISO is the only option. Panning on a bird in flight can go from bright southern skies right into a dark swamp canopy. No way we can compensate for that.

I have been using the setting you described quite a lot lately, especially for birds (bald eagles) in flight or stationary. Changing f-stop and/or shutter speed is literally at your finger tips and just let the camera set the ISO with preset limits.

I have also been using this mode a lot lately, and really like it. I have found that some shooting situations require you to set higher or lower maximum ISO settings to make it truly flexible.
